7-Up soda now has a simple and catchy three-syllable name but was originally called “Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda”, a rather unwieldy twelve-syllable monstrosity of a name. | |
| Hundreds of Wikipedia Editors Got Banned for Secretly Promoting Brands Wikipedia has 381 fewer editors today, after hundreds of accounts were banned for taking undisclosed pay to create and edit "promotional articles." According to a post on Wikipedia's administrator board, Wikipedia's CheckUser team investigated for months to uncover the accounts clogging the site with bogus articles for cash. You don’t even want to know how corrupt the world of content really is. We get contacted every single day by people trying to post “guest posts” that are really being paid for by shady content marketing companies that hire writers to trick websites into getting their lousy products linked in guest articles. Reviews on almost every single website are faked and written by employees or friends of the people that make the products. We’ve had one writer years ago try to shake down a company for money in exchange for a good review (he was promptly fired, of course). And don’t get me started on forum spam. They have gotten so complex now that they will have one person post a legitimate question, and then a completely different person on a different IP (or maybe using a VPN) will post an answer that links to a Microsoft forum topic that seems like it might be legitimate, until you realize that they posted the spam link there because their forum admins are lazy and don’t do a good job removing spam. And that’s just the highlights. It’s much worse the deeper you get. The good thing is when you try to have integrity in what you do, you’ll stand out from the pack of scammers and spammers. Amazon Prime Lets You Download Videos and Watch Offline Now In a move to put pressure on Netflix with something other than Emmy-nominated series like Transparent, Amazon now allows Prime members to download movies and shows to their Android and iOS devices for offline playback. No Internet? No problem. This is such an important feature — we end up renting movies or TV episodes on iTunes so we can watch them while traveling or on the plane, since it’s often hard to watch streaming video on hotel Wi-Fi. It would be great if Netflix would let you download at least a few episodes, but it’s likely that their streaming agreements do not allow them to offer this feature — and with the increased competition in the marketplace, Netflix is struggling to keep deals with content providers as it is. They’ve already lost most of the good movie deals, and many of their TV deals expire in the next few years — it’s far from a sure thing that they will be able to renew them. So downloadable Netflix videos aren’t very likely. Hopefully I’ll be proven wrong. | |

| In late 2014 Microsoft released the Band. It came out of left field. Rumors had been rolling around about Microsoft possibly doing a wearable, but details were non-existent. When it came out people were… well, confused. And rightly so. What is this thing? Is it a fitness tracker? Is it a smartwatch? Is it any good? The answer to all three questions is yes. | |
