Pebble Time Round – A New Face for Pebble At 7.5mm thin and weighing just 28 grams, Pebble Time Round is the thinnest and lightest smartwatch in the world. To my eyes, the new Pebble Time Round announced yesterday is one of the best looking smartwatches on the market, and unlike the cheap plastic low-end Pebble, this one is made from metal. It’s extremely light, thin, comes in a variety of styles and sizes, and it’s a smartwatch that really doesn’t look like a smartwatch. At $250, it costs about the same as a nice regular watch, but you get the benefit of wearing a smartwatch at the same time. We’ve been impressed with the Pebble since the first version came out, and they continue to push the envelope with new models, features, and styles. If we had to recommend a simple, basic smartwatch for the average person right now, it’s definitely a solid choice. The tradeoff in making this watch so small and thin is that the battery only lasts for 2 days instead of the 10 days that you’ll get on the plastic Pebble, although they say that 15 minutes of charging will make the battery last for 24 hours. The big problem as we see it, is with the price point — spending $99 on the plastic Pebble smartwatch gets you a very functional smartwatch with a battery that lasts more than a week. When you’re spending $250 for a Pebble Time Round it isn’t too much of a jump to spend $350 on the Apple Watch, which is miles ahead and can run full apps and completely integrate with your iPhone, not to mention Siri and Apple Pay and a ton of other features. The Apple Watch also gets nearly two days of battery life with average usage, which puts it right on par with the Pebble Time Round. It’s not even really fair to compare the Pebble with the Apple Watch, because they are really two different products that just happen to be strapped to your wrist. Bottom line: if you’re an Android user, we highly recommend any Pebble smartwatch. If you’re an iPhone user, get the Apple Watch… you just might want to wait a few more months for the app ecosystem to work itself out. Charlatans: The new wave of privacy profiteers A magic anonymity and privacy box that makes all internetting safe? Not so fast. Privacy profiteers, preying on the unsuspecting and uninformed, are among the year’s most disturbing security trends. There are a bunch of these “privacy routers” on the market now, or being funded through Kickstarter and other funding sites, and you should not buy one at this point. Security researchers have torn these things apart only to find that the people that created them don’t really have a clue about security, privacy, or how most of the technology works. They threw together a bunch of Linux software and stuck it on a box to sell to people. And then they lied, cheated, and threatened people when the truth came out. Read the article for all the details, and be very careful funding anything on Kickstarter or any other funding site. |
