A Routing Metric is a metric (variable) that is used by a router to decide which route out of numerous possibilities is the best one to use.

A Router Metric takes into account information such as bandwidth, load, delay, path length, hop count, reliability, maximum transmission unit (MTU), path cost, communications cost, etc.
