The term “smorgasbord”, used to refer to a wide variety of things such as “the carnival was a smorgasbord of oddities and entertainment”, is derived from the Swedish word “smörgåsbord”, a traditional buffet style arrangement of a multitude of hot and cold foods typically laid out as a celebratory meal. The term became internationally known as a result of such meals served at the Swedish Pavilion’s “Three Crowns Restaurant” at the 1939 New York World’s Fair.
