Thoughts from the Geek

Facebook had 1 Billion active users on Monday

We just passed an important milestone. For the first time ever, one billion people used Facebook in a single day. On Monday, 1 in 7 people on Earth used Facebook to connect with their friends and family.

The number of 1 billion users didn’t really click for me until he pointed out that 1 out of 7 people on Earth used Facebook in a single day. That’s just an incredible statistic — almost everybody everywhere has a Facebook account. Considering that a little over 3 billion people actually have the ability to use the internet, and you’re talking about 1 out of every 3 people on the planet using a single website. The most interesting number, however, is that 87% of those people were using a mobile device.

This just goes to show that the “Personal Computer” or PC is no longer what we think it is — the computer that we all carry around, that is the most personal to us, is our smartphone. Many people don’t even own a computer, but they do own a smartphone — in fact, in China, 86% of people only use a mobile phone to access the internet.

The smartphone is the new PC.

3.6 million Apple Watches shipped in Q2 2015, says IDC, making Apple No. 2 in wearables

In its latest wearable tracking report, the marketing research firm said Apple shipped 3.6 million units of the Apple Watch in the second quarter of 2015. That's a big number, considering the watch wasn't on sale for the entire three-month period. That makes Apple the second largest wearable company, behind Fitbit, which sold 4.4 million units during the same period. Given the higher average cost of the Apple Watch, it's quite likely that Apple's revenues from wearables is already bigger than Fitbit's.

The Apple Watch is an amazing little device, and it will change the world. What people don’t seem to get about it is that it’s not about shrinking smartphone apps down onto a tiny screen, it’s about creating a device that allows you to interact digitally with the physical world around you, while keeping tabs on what is happening online. I’ve worn mine every day since I got it, and I’ll continue to wear it until the next version comes out.

But like I tell everybody that asks me: Don’t buy it quite yet. Wait until Christmas. The upcoming Watch OS 2 is finally going to allow apps to run natively on the Watch, and it’s going to completely change how it works. Right now, only Apple’s apps run natively, and not even all of them. But soon, the creativity of developers will be able to run free with all the capabilities of a tiny supercomputer strapped to your wrist.

Windows: it’s always the next version

As somebody who uses Windows every day, and who upgraded to Windows 10 a few weeks before it was released, let me make a statement about all the positive Windows 10 reviews that not everyone is going to like. There are only two reasons Windows 10 is getting positive reviews. First, because it’s free. This one’s a given. Second, and more importantly: Windows 10 is getting positive reviews because none of the reviewers have forced themselves to use nothing but Metro applications. Here’s the cold and harsh truth as I see it: despite all the promises, Metro applications are still complete and utter garbage.

I couldn’t agree more. The new “Universal” or “Metro” apps are just absolutely terrible. They have tons of wasted white space for no good reason, but my biggest problem is that they aren’t comfortable to use while holding a tablet. They are designed to be scrolled left to right, but if you are holding a widescreen tablet in your hands, it’s uncomfortable to try and scroll the screen left to right. It’s really difficult to type on the screen, and I end up using the pen to (slowly) use the keyboard. Not a good experience.

Microsoft has already lost the operating system war, barring a miracle. The smartphone is now the PC, and it is dominated by Android and iOS. Windows is barely a blip on the mobile radar, and as desktop share drops, slowly but surely, they will lose their strong position.

This is why they are focusing so much energy on productivity and the cloud — they even put out apps for iPhone before they make them for their own operating system. At their recent developer conference they released programming tools for Linux users. This is a new Microsoft. They will continue to be relevant and powerful, but for different reasons.
