Lenovo quietly installed software on laptops, even if you wiped it

The users discovered the issue in May when using a new Lenovo laptop that automatically and covertly overwrote a system file on every boot, which downloaded a Lenovo updater and installed software automatically, even if Windows was reinstalled from a DVD. The only problem is that nobody actually asked for this software, and it persisted between clean installs of Windows. Lenovo was essentially exploiting a rootkit on its own laptops to ensure its software persists if wiped.

It appears that Windows has a feature that allows manufacturers hide crapware… in your system BIOS.

Which just goes to show that the unwanted crapware problem in Windows is systemic, and it’s not just the bad actors like Download.com. The entire ecosystem is built to allow crapware to run free.

It’s worth noting, of course, that this feature wasn’t designed for crapware. But it’s easy to see how it would get turned into that.

Even when told not to, Windows 10 just can't stop talking to Microsoft

Unfortunately for privacy advocates, these controls don’t appear to be sufficient to completely prevent the operating system from going online and communicating with Microsoft’s servers.

It’s really hard to make Windows 10 not send information back to Microsoft. Of course, if you are that worried about privacy you should probably just use Linux.

Apple brings Windows 10 support to Mac in Boot Camp update

the latest version of Boot Camp, which is currently rolling out to OS X Yosemite users as a system update, now comes with support for 64-bit versions of Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system.

Running Windows on a Mac gives you the best hardware combined with a familiar operating system. We have run Windows on MacBooks for the last 6 years here at HTG HQ.
