Hammering refers to the process of repeatedly attempting to connect to a server that is currently unavailable or busy. Hammering can be an automated process or the result of a user who is frustrated and constantly retrying the connection manually in order to connect to the server.

Hammering is very much like repeatedly hitting the redial button on a phone when a dialed number is busy (until the phone call is successful in getting through).
