A Stock Photo is a professionally taken photo that is purchased/licensed from a stock photo service for creative, business, and/or commercial use in place of hiring a photographer for a given project.

Stock Photos may be limited to a one-time use per purchase, may be purchased once and used repeatedly, may have a limited number of copies that can be printed if used in a non-electronic medium, or other allowances/restrictions depending on the terms and conditions of the agreement with the stock photo service in question.
