In 1751, the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly ordered the iconic Liberty Bell to be constructed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the colony’s original constitution. After it cracked during a test and was recast twice, the bell was hung in the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall) in June of 1753. It was rung, most famously, on July 8, 1776 to call people to hear the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence.
