A Modal Window is a secondary (child) window to a main (parent) window (web browser or application) that temporarily disables (blocks access to) the main window until it is closed.

Modal Windows can be pop-up/pop-over windows that block access to the tab/window in a web browser or dialogue boxes of various abilities/functionality for an application that a user is currently working with.
