Lost Cluster

A Lost Cluster (a.k.a. Lost Allocation Unit and Lost File Fragment) is a data fragment that has lost its identification (no longer belongs to any file) in the system’s file management system and is no longer connected with any of the file names in the system’s file allocation table.

Lost Clusters can occur due to improperly closing a file, shutting down a computer while an application is still open, or improperly removing portable storage media while a file is still open.
