November 1, 2018 Yesterday we pointed out that the latest Apple CPUs are so blazing fast that they actually beat recent Intel chips in some benchmarks. The new iPad Pro is so fast that it can outperform 92% of laptops on the market. And wow, the response was… not good. Lots of very angry people pointed out that we said mobile CPUs are faster than "your desktop" in the title, and their desktop was certainly not going to get beat by a phone. Which is definitely a fair criticism, so we changed the title to "most desktops" instead. A lot more people complained that Apple CPUs can't be actually faster in longer benchmarks because they are throttling due to power and cooling constraints. Which is a fair point—ARM CPUs are approaching Intel CPUs in speed and beating them at some tasks, despite having both arms tied behind their back due to the cooling and power restraints on a mobile platform. So what if you removed those constraints? What happens when Apple makes a desktop or laptop CPU with a heatsink and fan on it, stops throttling, and adds a lot more cores to boost multi-threaded performance? New technology should be exciting. Geeks everywhere should rejoice in the marvel of engineering that makes a phone in your pocket nearly as fast as the rig on your desk.
