A Power-On Self Test (POST for short) is a series of built-in diagnostic tests performed by a computer’s BIOS when a computer is started up in order to make sure that everything is working properly.

Items checked include random access memory (RAM), disk drives, hard drives, the central processing unit (CPU), peripheral devices, and other hardware components/devices.
