A Data Dictionary is a file or set of files that holds the “meta data” for a database. Data Dictionaries could contain the following examples of data in them:

  • A list of all files in the database
  • The number of records in each file
  • The names and types of each field
  • Data ownership
  • Data relationships to other objects
