System Hardening is the process of making a computer more secure by ensuring that all the latest patches to the operating system and individual applications/programs are applied automatically as soon as they are available.

Other actions that can help harden a system include: installing anti-virus software, making sure a firewall is set up and active, closing off certain ports, disabling/blocking all file-sharing, disabling cookies, using encryption, keeping backups, etc.
